Ex Libris translated from the Latin is "from the book". More commonly, Ex Libris are called bookplates.

When books became a precious possession, owners would commission an artist to prepare a Ex Libris that could be glued on the inside cover to designate ownership.  The name of the owner is part of the bookplate and most commonly depicts some imagery that is identifiable by the owner.
